History -- William Daniel White

William Daniel White was born May 3, 1921 in Denver, Co. His parents were Rev. Steuart D. White and Katherine Hooper White. Father was a pastor in Rock River Conference for 41 years and was District Superintendent of the Southern District.

William attended North Central College and graduated in 1943. He received an Honorary D. D. in 1966 from his Alma Matter.

He attended Garret Seminary and graduated in 1951, while serving a student church on the north side of Chicago for three years. In 1996 he received an Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Seminary.

While still a senior in college, he was drafted in to the Infantry of the U. S. Army, in which he served for four years. He went to Japan with the Occupation Forces, and was stationed in Hiroshima soon after the atomic bomb was dropped. He attained the rank of Capitan while still in the Infantry.

William was a high school English teacher and football coach in Bensenville, IL for two years before attending Garrett in 1948.

He was ordained in 1952 and was admitted to the Rock River Conference. His appointments were: 1948 - Parkview, 1955 - Dekalb, 1965, Elmhurst First, 1965 - Superintendent Rockford District, 1970 - Coordinator, Conference Program staff, 1976 - Downers Grove First, 1981 - Chicago Temple, 1989 retired. In retirement; served as NIC Council Director, as Interim, served as interim pastor in many northern Illinois churches, served Mequon UMC in the Wisconsin Conference as Interim, served on the Garrett-Evangelical Board of Trustees for 30 years, served on the Board of Trustees of United Homes and Services, worked on Promotion for Africa University.

William White and Carol R. lacer were united in marriage on Nov. 6 1944 in Buffalo, N. Y. Their children are William F. White, born 9/30/48, Paul H. White, born 4/5/51, Christine M. White (Ryan) born 4/17/53, Barbara C. White born 7/25/59. They have five grandchildren, who live in Madison, Wisconsin.

William died in their home with Hospice Care, in Madison, Wisconsin on April 19, 1997. Two memorial services were held - the first in Madison, Wisconsin with Bishop Sharon Rader and pastor David Lyon of First UM Church participating on April 22, the second Memorial Service was held on April 27 in First Church, Downers Grove. Participating were: Rev. Fred Conger, Rev. Robert Crocker, Rev. Russell Koenig, Bishop Sprague, Bishop Ammmons, President Neal Fisher.

Burial of created remains will be in Egg Harbor, WI on the shores of Green Bay.
