Shelter Meals

Epworth United Methodist Church provides a Sunday Supper for the 65 men in the Warming Center. Members and friends of the church are asked to:

Sign up (a family or group of friends) to feed the 65 men an evening supper. Three ways of doing this are listed below.
  1. Provide the food and have the shelter helpers prepare the meal. They most often need protein items and fresh food. REST provides some canned vegetables and pastas. Some of the provided food recently has been:
    1. canned goods and fresh vegetables for soup
    2. ingredients for spagetti
    3. hot dogs or polish sausages and buns
    4. chicken (we have used donated cash to buy leg quarters by the case when on sale)
    5. salad, drinks and other additions to a basic dish
This food is taken to the shelter before or after worship and left with a note of what the meal plan is. This option encourages the shelter residents to do more for themselves.

  2. Prepare a supper meal (at home or in the parlors kitchen). This would include purchasing the food, preparing cooked items and taking to the shelter before or after worship or at 9:00 Sunday evening. Some of the menus used have been:
    1. Hearty soup or stew with bread
    2. Spagetti with bread or salad
    3. Macaroni and cheese with cut up hot dogs
    4. Chili and corn bread

  3. Provide funds for purchase of meal ingredients.
